Cloth Diaper 101

You know you don't want to throw away bag after bag of dirty disposable diapers, but you haven't figured out how you will find the ease of disposables in cloth?

Metro Minis can help. Luckily, several American companies have applied 21st century ingenuity to cloth diapering, taking into account busy lives, shrinking budgets, and environmental concerns.
At our Cloth Diaper Class, Annie Frisbie will walk you through the world of Cloth Diapers. She will discuss the styles of diapers, pros and cons of each, and how they might fit into your daily life. There are cloth diapers for every budget, every personality, and every caregiver.  Annie gets into all the nitty gritty details; from figuring out how many diapers you will actually need, to dealing with the poopy diaper at home and on the go.  Plus, she shares her best tips on odor removal, washing in New York City's hard water, detergent options and convenient accessories that will make the whole cloth diapering experience easier.  She has been there, she has done that, and she will help you make an easy transition into cloth diapering.  Class is FREE!

School Kid Toy Exhibit #1

Hello Everybody! I thought I would start writing about all the wonderful products we have in our store that are great for kids behind toddler years.
My son Matteo is 5 years old and started Kindergarten last year. Right now he is all into making up stories.
So one day I bought him one of the eeBoo Big Books.
Basically one page is ruled and the other page is blank. Matteo usually draws a picture on the blank page and then writes a little story on the ruled paper. Its tons of fun for him and he often sits down for hours drawing picture and making up stories. And best of all he uses his imagination and learns how to spell out words. This is not just great for at home. You can literally bring it everywhere just make sure to pack a pencil and some crayons.

Elimination Communication with Koyuki Smith

We communicate with our babies about almost everything – when they want to eat, when they want to sleep, when they want to be picked up, when they want to be put down…So have you ever wondered why we don't communicate with them about their peeing and pooping?  Instead, we literally cover it up, encouraging our babies to ignore their own elimination habits until they are toddlers, filling landfills and suffering from diaper rash all the way!

ELIMINATION COMMUNICATION is a gentle, healthy, and responsive practice that encourages infants to signal their needs and parents to be receptive to those signals.  It promotes healthier attitudes towards elimination; alleviates the stress of toddler potty training; frees families from their dependence on smelly, expensive, and environmentally damaging diapering practices; and strengthens the attachment between parents and their babies.  Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, who in the 1960s pioneered what has become the mainstream approach to toilet training, had this to say about Elimination Communication in 2005: "What I wish is that more women [families!] could be free enough to do it that way."  Come to our MetroMinis Elimination Communication to explore this freedom for yourself and your baby!

Introductory Price: $15 per person/$20 per couple.

Intro to Wrapping

Metro Minis’ Introduction to Woven Wraps is a 45-minute class designed for newcomers who are interested in wrapping. Baby wrap carriers are far and away the most versatile and comfortable baby carrier available. Wraps are a simple piece of cloth, usually long that gets wrapped around you and your baby. In a wrap, your baby or toddler can be worn front or back, facing in or out, high up on your back, low down on your front, or on either hip. When worn correctly, wraps make it as comfortable to wear your toddler as your newborn.

Using a baby wrap does not have to be difficult. During this class you will learn the basic carries to start you on your path to wrapping your baby. We will teach you the details about the various wraps. How does each differ from the other in terms of supportiveness, weave, stretch, washability, breathability, and durability. How are these wraps different from any random piece of fabric? Plus we will discuss the reasons wraps are fabulous; how to choose the correct size, how to nurse in a wrap, how to change positions. Finally, we always pay particular attention to teaching safe and comfortable wrapping techniques; both for the child and the caregiver. Included in the class is a follow-up instructional DVD to take home.

Due to the detailed in-depth nature of this small class advanced registration is required. Class is FREE.

Please note: This class focuses on non-stretchy woven wraps. A few example brands are Wrapsody, Didymos, Storchenwiege, BBslen, Zara, Bara Barn and Girasol. If you are interested in strechy wraps, please visit us for our Babywearing 101 class.
